THE BALANCE TEST
Start with the door closed. If you have an automatic opener, release the mechanism so that you can operate the door by hand. You should be able to lift the door with little resistance and it should also be able to stay open three to four feet above the floor. If the door is unable to stay open without your assistance, contact a qualified garage door maintenance technician.
THE REVERSAL TEST
Before you perform this test, make sure the balance on your garage door is correct. Once that is done, lift your garage door all the way up and place a 2 x 4 piece of wood in the center of the door opening. Make sure nothing else is in the way and click your remote to close the door. The garage door should hit the piece of wood and reverse. If the door does not reverse, contact a qualified garage door technician.
THE FORCE TEST
Start with your garage door open and stand outside with a remote. Click your remote to close the door. as the door is coming down, hold the bottom of the door with your hands. If the door doesn’t immediately reverse or excessive force is needed to stop the door, contact a qualified garage door technician.
KEEP YOUR DOOR LUBRICATED
Lubricating your garage door is very important when it comes to the lifespan of your door. If you want to significantly increase the lifespan of your door, buy a can of spray lube from a trusted garage door manufacturer and spray every single moving part of your door. This includes the spring, the hinges, and the rollers. Be especially careful when spraying the spring because it is a high tension part and can be very dangerous if incorrectly adjusted.
